10.-12.10. Emese Veszely: OXOX

OXOX:

10-12 October

artworks by Emese Veszely with DJ LOVE, Tymon Teo Borzecki, Sophia Mitiku, and Artun Alaska Arasli curated by Micol Curatolo

Things leaking out of us and flooding in. Emotional traps. Mellow addictions, noxious addictions. Tracking and identification. Minuscule energy in the binary actions of X and O: contagious liveliness that spreads fast and pervasive X O X O X O ↑ ↑ takes over the body. He be far away, he stay far away. Shoot me in the heart, I’m ready to love you. My friend will catch me as I fall.

OXOX reflects on love and relationships in different spheres of online love, social structures, platonic companionships, and private desires. Veszely’s latest series “two______souls.” consists of illustrations in red ballpoint pen on graph paper. Symbols, full and void squares produce patterns that define spaces and movements. The subject shifts from the microscopic though the invasive scale of molecules, to indefinite abstract spaces framed by porous barriers, and onto the analytical representation of human connection and its effects on the body. Pain and desire; obsession and care. Dazing beauty and soft belly. The illustrations explore the balance between our inexplicable desires and the intimate connections of the everyday.

The exhibition is accompanied by a program of artworks and performances by invited artists who reflect on the topic through their own practice:

Emese Veszely (HU) is a visual artist and graphic designer based in Helsinki. As an avid collector of stones, unsent love letters, and digital debris, she brings strokes, dots, and squares to life through excessive repetition, conceptualization, and abstraction.

Micol Curatolo is a young curator and producer, interested in people’s stories and shared emotions. Starting her research on topics of migration and cultural mediation, she aims to participate in ethical practices of intercultural discourse through art. She approaches contemporary curatorship as a practice of listening, mediation and shared storytelling.

DJ LOVE is an alter ego of Vastseliina FM, an event series and a radio show at IDA radio.

Tymon Teo Borzecki is a Helsinki based visual artist inspired by the coincidental joys, pleasures and humor of the mundane every-day. In his work he explores the themes of trans masculinity, queer sexuality, body prosthetics, disability grief, intimacy, and loneliness.

Sophia Mitiku is a Helsinki based artist whose work reflects on liminal spaces of daydreams and desire, pink noise, glitches of nostalgia - a requiem for love. Her debut album ‘Copacabana’ will be released later this year.

Artun Alaska Arasli (1987) is an artist and writer based in Amsterdam. Presentations of his work include Prose, Kantine, Brussels; Cardena: Warming Up, Rozenstraat, Amsterdam; Porcupine, Jan Van Eyck, Maastricht; The Beauty Commission, Stedelijk Museum, Amsterdam.
