Morphing into Something is an exhibition composed of textile works that explore the oscillation between the roles of m/other* and artist. By drawing parallels between care work and the slow,
deliberate process of hand-sewing and quilting, the artist documents and explores sensations, feelings and thoughts connected to becoming a m/other and simultaneously unbecoming.
Rather than treating m/otherhood as a constraint, the exhibition frames it as a generative force—a catalyst for meaningful and transformative artistic methodologies that reconsider time, space and tools. During the development of these works, the artist reflected on the following questions:
“What do I have immediate access to?”
“What can I make in my current stage in m/otherhood?”
“What does time look like for me now, and how do I adapt to create within this new concept of time?”
“What meaning does 'create' hold for me now?”
“What does an ‘art practice’ look like for me now?”
“How can I reinvent or rethink my tools to accommodate my shi
ing identities?”
“How can I challenge dominant studio practices and artistic identities?”
Morphing into Something offers a space not to choose between roles, but to co-exist with these identities, challenge, reimagine and redefine what an artistic practice should look like from a
mother-centric perspective.
Quilt Workshop:
During the exhibition from Wednesday to Friday, there will be an open workshop to make your own art quilt. The workshop is free of charge and there will be materials provided, but you are welcome to bring your own! Donations are welcome to cover material costs. All ages are welcome.
*When I use the word m/other, I refer to the role or identity of the mother, which is not tied to gender or its typical
stereotypes. M/other refers to an individual intrinsically connected to another through pregnancy, birth, surrogacy, care
work, or adoption, as illustrated by the equation: me + other = m(other).
