"In the effort to find one’s way among the contents of memory

(Aristotle emphasizes)

a principal of association is helpful—

“passing rapidly from one step to the next.

For instance from milk to white,

from white to air,

from air to damp,

after which one recollects autumn supposing one is trying to

recollect

that season.”

Or supposing,

fair reader,

you are trying to recollect not autumn but freedom,

a principal of freedom

the existed between two people, small and savage

as principals go—but what are the rules for this?"

Anne Carson — The Beauty of the Husband

Rawhide is a duo exhibition by Sara Blosseville and Shia Conlon. For the show, the artists exchanged images from their personal archives, drawing on fragments of France and Ireland, where they are from, alongside found and archival material. Images pass between them, gathering new associations as each artist enters the other's visual language. The resulting works become a shared correspondence shaped by friendship and by their respective practices of looking at the human and more-than-human world.

Shia Conlon (b.1990, Ireland) is a writer, artist and community organiser based in Helsinki, Finland. His multidisciplinary practice spans photography, film, publishing, sculpture, writing and archival research, exploring questions of trans representation and history-making. He is the co-organiser of Trans Library Helsinki and former editor/art director of Almanac Press.

Sara Blosseville (b.1994, France) is a multidisciplinary artist working at the intersection of sculpture, photography and printed matter. Grounded by a rural cultural heritage and a cyberfeminist approach to the material world, her interest in playing with cultural media formats is intertwined with embodied practices such as gardening, fashion up-cycling and gameplay narratives. She is the co-organiser of the festival Under The Leaf - Helsinki Art Book Fair and of the curatorial project Light-harvesting Complex.
