The adder’s body was lifeless, hanging comfortlessly from the oar of a rowboat.

Placed upon a large stone, waiting to be carried away by a bird of the forest.

The themes of the exhibition arise from memories, the imagined, archives, and the periphery. Alongside one another are oil paintings, sculpture, and experiments made with natural pigments.

Maria Sorjonen (b. 1994, Lappeenranta) graduated from the Free Art School in 2023 and is currently completing the final year of her bachelor’s degree at the Academy of Fine Arts of the University of the Arts Helsinki. She works primarily through painting and sculpture. Sorjonen’s practice is often based on an archive of found photographs and family photographs, through which she explores the fragmentary nature of memory and the experience of being in nature. Recently, Sorjonen has focused on researching pigments derived from natural materials. The processes involved in making these pigments are slow, and an immense amount of work culminates in a single teaspoon of paint.
