Itsetön

Itse (self) was believed to be a part of the human soul, some kind of a reflection to it. It existed independently of the body, unlike löyly, which was connected to the body. It was thought that itse was inherited in the family during name-giving. Sometimes it could appear as etiäinen, which proceeded ahead of the body. Itse determined the person's character, and it could be lost as a consequence of a traumatic event or a broken vow. Then the person would become itsetön (selfless). A person who was itsetön was depressed, outcast from the community and without any life flowing through the soul - an empty shell, who lost it's meaning. A lost soul could only be returned by the touch of an another soul.

Maria Sorjonen (b. 1994) is a painter starting the third year at Free Art School in Helsinki. Before her studies at Free Art School she was studying with Russian painters for two years. This is her first private exhibition.

The focal point of Sorjonen's work is the twisted, distorted reality. This compliation of artwork is inspired by Finnish folk tales, incoherent childhood memories, old photography and symbolism.
