“The photo library of my phone is filled with everyday wonders. In the middle of a wall of a house, high out of my reach, is a door that leads nowhere. A piece of foil trapped under a car tire resembles a figure riding a horse. Two people dressed in the exact same colors walk one after the other, unaware of each other.
The otherwise steady rhythm of the black-and-white tiles is interrupted when the white tiles align side by side.
I take pleasure in recognizing such quirks. The strangeness I find is a secret between me and the place; a detail that only a few notice. Discovering these quirks can be quite rewarding as the urban environment is very clinical and there is little room for imperfections on the streets. It seems that someone else besides me must be keeping an eye on the discrepancies, correcting them before we even notice.
That’s why I always get excited when I encounter something “extra” or “waste” in the urban space that doesn’t have any visible purpose. Throughout this spring and summer I’ve been collecting these abandoned materials; tiles and stones that have come loose from the pavement, metal scraps found along the railway, crumpled receipts, a used grill grate and old windows without an owner.”
The "Tracks & Traces" exhibition showcases the materials I have salvaged from the cityscape and then molded into my creation. After the exhibition I will return my findings to their original locations and surrender them back to the urban environment. Will these quirks be removed, or will they find their own place within the urban space?
