Pieni is moving again. They move slowly. Up the hill, up the stairs. Blue, green, brown. And then some doors. Which one to choose? Feels tiring, and stuck somehow. Ugh! A pit. Tunnels, tunnels… ”Forward”, Pieni says. A glimpse of sunlight, grass. A jump over a cliff to the other side. Clouds and gravel… Arrival to a place of soft trees and taking a breather there.
”Eteenpäin, Pieni sanoi” (=Forward, Pieni said) is a series of paintings that create a story, Pieni as its main character. Moving from one painting to the next Pieni goes through many feelings and vibes. Meanwhile the world emerges around it. Shapes, creatures, struggling, being underground and overground. Sometimes it gets hasty, even.
Essi Nieminen is a visual artist, art educator and musician who works and lives in Helsinki. ”Eteenpäin, Pieni sanoi” is her second exhibition focusing on this theme, working with Pieni. In her painting process, Pieni works as a tool/a mirror/an entity that brings a unique kind of curiosity and kindness to it.
