Is the fate of animals sealed in their ability to domesticate and adapt as wallflowers alongside humans?
Wallflower is Sanna Koskimäki's (born 1993) first solo exhibition, focusing on the adaptation of non-human animals to the world built by humans. The oldest paintings were created during the beginning of the COVID-19 pandemic, while the newest ones were made afterward, reflecting the closing and opening of the world.
Koskimäki is a versatile visual artist who currently works primarily with oil and acrylic paints on canvas. Originally from Lappeenranta, Koskimäki completed her Master's degree in Art at Aalto University in 2019, and she resides and works in Helsinki. Her interest in the relationships between different species of animals and humans began with her thesis at Aalto University, which explored power dynamics between humans and dogs. Since then, the topic has expanded to contemplate the interrelationships between humans and the rest of nature.
