Eini Knuutinen: I remember
I Remember is loosely based on madeleine moment by Marcel Proust. I wanted to explore this sort of strong re-living of a memory aroused by a sensorial experience through art. There is often something familiar and relatable in memories and stories, but still you cannot ever fully replicate the experience. Even to oneself.
Each piece in series I Remember contains a handwoven tapestry, sound and scent that together simulate the memory of one individual. Pieces are based on memories I collected by interviewing adults with different ages and backgrounds. I collected stories of significant, personal moments that contained strong sensorial information such as smells, colours and sounds. Based on five of these stories I started to rebuild the memories filtered by my own interpretation and reliving.
I wove a small tapestry to depict a glimpse of the memory. The slow method worked as an analog for the entwining of a memory. The visual content receives new depth and meaning with the addition of a soundscape and the scent related to the memory. Personal reactions and associations are aroused depending on the experiences and memories of the participant.
