notes:
pink water shimmers green at night,
into a disappearing and emerging web;
red and white shreds, alone and in pairs, entwined in fences
tied to broken places, no longer blocking the way,
two run toward something, into a yellow night, toward a promising light
toward each other; fading red traces, water like blood
receding and approaching water, the mouths of waves side by side, pulling and retreating,
catching, following, spitting out and swallowing in turn;
shadows linger, waiting, until they start to cross, wildly, multiply, merge;
one appears as a shadow, the other shows a face but I cut it before _____,
the gaze won’t focus, flowers between red and blue,
we two only as figures, as others; images only resembling
blue clings to red rock, as if it had always been there,
perhaps the meaning hides in pink, in red soles of feet, and if one looks closely,
Välissä(m)me (in between us) explores a dialogical space of possibility that exists between the self and the other. Here, we document processes that unfold simultaneously, in parallel, and between us. This in-between space reveals and obscures our shared and individual ways of seeing, sensing, and experiencing time, as well as the nearness of another. The exhibition moves fluidly through these qualities, bringing together paintings from different periods, texts gathered from various corners of our time, and a site-specific dual-channel video filmed during our time together. These forms converse with one another in the space — sometimes across different times, sometimes from opposite sides of the same moment, and at times in an inseparable presence. We ask: who is truly the subject of writing and gaze when our voices merge, when their sources remain hidden? Can they even be distinguished once we have entered this shared space?
