'Myself’ never coincides with my image; for it is the image which is heavy, motionless, stubborn (which is why society sustains it, and 'myself' which is light, divided, dispersed; like a bottle-imp, 'myself' doesn’t hold still, giggling in my jar..." (Roland Barthes)

I am a shoe and I'm looking at my image. The image proves that I exist, I'm alive, but by referring to the past it claims that I'm dead. Where am I? What happened? I remember stepping from a clay tile into a dark kiln-room and I remember stepping out as different. I was gleaming, cracked, I was sprawled and vanished, I pushed from the surface and submerged in it. I practiced relinquishing and surrendered to the change. My image is a fragment of events, but I am still here (waiting at the coat rack).

Displayed works Workshoes (Dark Chamber) and Workshoes (Light Chamber) are part of Aura Latva-Somppis MA thesis' artistic production for Aalto ARTS Contemporary Design major. In her thesis Latva-Somppi researches the ontology of change in artistic process, the dramaturgy between the material and the makers intention and the magnitude of relinquishing.
