The Dance Work HUD [skin, iho] explores the topography of experiences that gets collected by the skin. Tactile memories form a landscape where hints of stories and narratives can dance. A choreographic mesh of skin memory replay in movement, as visions may replay as if still being seen by the eye. Scenes travel between the stories of one's own and the stories of others.
As a reference point stands Nefertiti, the ancient ruler and queen, who’s story and influence is somewhat toned down in many a history book. She arrives casually in the landscape of this venue, multiplied and transformed, through cross-sectioned time-eras. Carried by and carrying several stories and registers of storytelling, she is many.
When my dance met the colourful art work of Leena Rouhiainen, Nefertiti in the Garden of Scents, during my solowork in EMMA- Museum, resulted this for me in further associations regarding how women and their stories throughout history have, or often have not, been written down for future generations to be found and continued. Some answers or patterns of reasons for why this is, provides Caroline Criado- Perez’ bok Invisible Women - Databias in a World Designed for Men (2019), where she, case by case, elaborates on how often and to what extent the female perspective has been made invisible, throughout time and across geographical borders.
I have approached the movement material of the scene reading the book Invisible Women - Databias in a World Designed for Men (2019) written by Caroline Criado-Perez. The solo is not an attempt to choreographically dramatize the book, the scenes have however been created side by side with the reading experience.
Through movement we can follow Nefertiti as she, through layers of time and various situations, approaches questions on how to prioritize and attend to one's own perception, memories and experience? I also ponder upon to what extent the capability to remember is fundamental to the creation of meaning and the understanding of significance as chain reactions. I view dance as a bodily- thinking. How does it feel in the body when meaning and significance alternately springs to the surface and sinks back into the depths?
Texts presented on stage are written by the dance artist Anna Stenberg. Languages Swedish, Finnish, English. Texts by other authors are present in the space and can be read while witnessing the performance. The audience experience and the reading experience can therefore entangle, at Your own pace and initial. With this work, I ponder upon the significance and importance of putting words to-, I investigate the relation between movement and text. I see the expression through language and why not also other forms of expression, as a chain of choices: what we choose to notice, name and word, becomes what can be found and continued by later generations. To articulate becomes an act of establishing. What is talked and written of may continue to influence us, what is left unsaid might with time be forgotten and disappear. Language and the memory of the moving body are here placed side by side. The dancework also becomes a moment where the female bodily perspective is made visible.
There are optional, easy-access, participatory elements present during the performance and the installation. It is also possible to witness the work without further interaction and participating.
